Who owns the data stored on a Deskscaler Hosted Desktop

One of the most common questions asked when moving to a Deskscaler Hosted Desktop environment is who owns the data and what happens to that data if you decide to stop using Myrtec services.

The first part of this is quite easy to answer. You own the data.

Myrtec provides services for managing the access and disaster recovery of that data but at the end of the day the data inside of your hosted desktop environment is yours.

The Deskscaler Hosted Desktop environment runs on Amazon Web Services and either Google Apps or Office 365.

AWS clearly outlines the Proprietary Rights of the user in the AWS Customer Agreement which can be view by clicking here.

In relation to user data, section 8.1 of the document states

“8.1 Your Content. As between you and us, you or your licensors own all right, title, and interest in and to Your Content. Except as provided in this Section 8, we obtain no rights under this Agreement from you or your licensors to Your Content, including any related intellectual property rights. You consent to our use of Your Content to provide the Service Offerings to you and any End Users. We may disclose Your Content to provide the Service Offerings to you or any End Users or to comply with any request of a governmental or regulatory body (including subpoenas or court orders).”

Now that we have made it clear about ownership of your data, you ask what happens if you feel this is not the right solution for you? How do I get retrieve the data to move to a new solution?

Well, there is several ways this can be achieved and it will depend what services you have and where you a migrating your data to.

If you are staying with AWS but migrating away from Myrtec then we can provide a shared snapshot within AWS for your new provider to obtain. If you are just using AWS services and not a Hosted Desktop then we can also simply migrate your services.

Otherwise you will need to export the data directly out of  the Hosted Desktop via the Citrix receiver or by using an online storage service such as S3, Google Drive or Onedrive.

It is best to contact us about your plans and we can work with you to work out the best solution available to your situation.
