All I want for Christmas....

With Christmas just around the corner, I am joining the long list of parents struggling with the iPad vs. cricket bat debate.

That is, do I succumb to peer (and toddler) pressure and get the latest gadget or do I take the moral high ground and buy something more in line with the days of old when kids used to climb trees and play in the street until dark?

I recently read an article that reported 44% of kids aged between 6 and 12 have iPads at the top of their wish lists this Christmas. Do you know how much Lego you can buy for the price of an iPad?? A lot. And you’d have money left over to buy dump trucks and soccer balls.

Admittedly, with two boys aged 1 and 3, I can probably escape the technology gadgets for a year or two yet. It might just give Santa enough time to save up the funds for when an iPad, iPod, iPhone, and XBox 360 all appear on the same wish list!

This year, more than ever, I have come to realise just how influential technology will be for this generation. Unable to answer the age-old question of ‘Why?’ for my 3 year old recently, I was a little shocked when his response was ‘Don’t worry Mummy, I’ll Google it’.

And so, in the age of iPads, iPhones and iPods Touches, I will take comfort in knowing that I share my struggle with parents/Santas all around the world.
